Heathside is urging all its members to give very serious consideration to taking part in the SAL this year.

It has been impressed upon the Committee that remaining in this league is important for the club's credibility and standing. They have believed it, so much so that they are committing effort and money to making it happen.

Not only does Heathside need the very excellent athletes who win races, jumps and throws (Seyfu, for example) it also needs the depth provided by club colleagues.

Let's take a detailed look at  last season's matches.

In the four matches Heathside came 4th, 3rd, 5th and 3rd.

In match 2 we were 3rd, 2 points behind Ryston.

In the women's pole vault the results were

If we'd just had 2 participants in this event on that occasion, the 2 points for coming 4th in the A string would have put us level with Ryston, and the 5 for winning the B string would have put us in 2nd place.

In match 4 we were also 3rd, 12 points behind Thurrock.

Looking at the womens pole vault again the results were

12427906099?profile=RESIZE_710x

If we'd just had 2 participants in this event on that occasion, the 4 points for coming 2nd in the A string, and the 5 for winning the B string would have gathered 9 of those points straightaway.

And look who won the A string. Admittedly Sue (71 years young) is a world class pole vaulter, when you qualify her performances with "in her age group". If only we could find a couple of women pole vaulters.

Sorry to harp on about the women's team, but there are a couple more gaps, relatively easy to fill, in the triple jump - 4 points available just for taking part, and the hammer - 3 points.

And 4 + 3 + 9 makes 16 - easily enough for second place. And a one place improvement in each match puts us in the promotion positions.
